Middle East Payment Services (MEPS) and UnionPay International (UPI) have signed a partnership agreement under which the former will accept UnionPay cards in its POS terminals and ATMs in Jordan and Palestine.

As per the agreement, MEPS will also serve as a third party service provider in Iraq, and will be authorised to issue and process transactions on behalf of UPI.

MEPS CEO Khaled Zakaria said: "Allowing us to expand into new markets and putting us in touch with a growing customer base, our new scheme with UnionPay International marks an extraordinary leap forward for MEPS.

"By initiating new and effective card schemes, we persist in our ongoing efforts to promote the use of secure electronic payment solutions by both individuals and companies, contributing to the development of the sector."

China UnionPay chairman Ge Huayong added: "Since last year, our project with the two major acquirers in Jordan has progressed smoothly, and is expected to realize full acceptance by the end of this year. The landing of this project will comprehensively improve our service to UnionPay cardholders visiting Jordan."

In addition to Jordan, UnionPay cards are also accepted for payment in other Middle East countries including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Turkey, Oman, Yemen, Iraq and Qatar.
