The central bank of Sri Lanka has given the
green light to the telco Dialog Axiata to kick off its mobile
payment service for its 7.5 million customers.

Hans Wijayasuriya, head of Dialog Axiata told
local media:

“The dawn of the mobile money era in Sri Lanka
has been made possible by the progressive, and financial inclusion
focused, regulatory ethos of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.”

Dialog Axiata’s service is a wallet that
enables customers to pay utility bills, carry out P2P money
transfers and make payments at the point of sale (POS) at a number
of stores shops in the country, according the company.

Wijayasuriya added:

“Mobile Money technology will transform the
way we transact cash and will enable electronic money interchange
and electronic payments to be brought within the reach of every Sri
Lankan citizen”
