Foodservice retailer McDonald’s has selected payments platform provider Adyen for mobile payments in all its worldwide markets. The service will first launch in the UK in early 2020.

The Adyen payments platform connects directly to Visa, Mastercard and other consumer-preferred payment methods. Apart from mobile payments, the platform supports online and in-store transactions.

McDonald’s operates more than 38,000 locations in over 100 countries. Adyen’s platform is expected to simplify and scale up payments via a single integration.

Clients will be able to add new stores, markets and regions. Besides, Adyen provides support for chosen payment methods, a single data view and customer insights.

McDonald’s senior vice-president of Global Technology and Digital Leandro Balbinot said: “With Adyen’s scalable platform, McDonald’s will be able to continue to provide customers a seamless experience through a variety of payment methods that align with the unique needs of our markets.

“We look forward to rolling out this platform in several markets internationally, beginning with the UK in early 2020.”

Adyen COO Kamran Zaki added: “As the only truly unified, tech focused, payments platform, we are thrilled to enter into this agreement with McDonald’s to support their in-app payments.

“Working together, the mobile payment experience will be even easier for McDonald’s customers.”

In February this year, Adyen launched a new payment method to support open banking. Adyen Open Banking payment method is expected to decrease payments cost and lower fraud exposure.

Over the year, the payments company forged partnerships with PatPat, BrandBank and Alipay.
