Payment services provider DaraPay has formed an alliance to allow Chinese tourists to use Alipay app for payments in Cambodia.

Operated by Ant Financial Services Group, Alipay supports online and in-store payments in and outside China. The payment platform, which currently supports 27 currencies, also facilitates cross-border transactions.

Under the partnership with DaraPay, Alipay will be accepted at more than 3,000 outlets in Phnom Penh, Kandal, Kampong Cham, Siem Reap and Battambang province in Cambodia.

DaraPay and Alipay intend to combine their respective systems into an on-demand digital payment service for people travelling from China.

Statistics show that over 1.7 million Chinese tourists visited Cambodia last year. The number is predicted to increase to three million by 2020 and five million by 2025.

DaraPay general manager Phok Ratha said: “The partnership with Alipay is an important step that takes DaraPay to the next level of our business development.

“We do not only collaborate with local businesses but we are also actively working with international partners as part of our new strategic roadmap to enter a new horizon.”

The partnership follows Alipay’s announcement of a target to support 10 million small and medium businesses in Europe over the coming five years.

Included in the strategy is the expansion of partnership with Worldline, a European acquirer.

Worldline will collaborate with Alipay’s e-wallet partners in Asia to allow European merchants to accept payments via Alipay-enabled points of sale.

Alipay also created mini programmes to provide various services, including payments and personalised recommendations, for airport shops.
