Australian buy now, pay later (BNPL) payments provider Afterpay has partnered with American clothing retail company Gap to bring flexible payment options to shoppers.

Now, the shoppers of clothing brands Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic, and Athleta can choose Afterpay during checkout on Gap’s e-commerce website.

They can make the payments in four interest-free instalments.

Under the partnership, Gap brands have been added to Afterpay’s Shop Directory as per the request of Afterpay customers.

In its first quarter, Afterpay active customers increased to 6.5 million people in the US. The addition of Gap complements this development.

Currently, Gap is said to be the largest clothing retailer to offer Afterpay’s BNPL service, in line with its strategy to offer more online shopping options.

Gap chief digital and technology officer John Strain said: “Collaborating with Afterpay gives our customers the power of choice when shopping across our family of brands.

“By adding Afterpay to our other payment options, we are able to provide a more customised shopping experience, give our customers additional convenience and control, and reach a younger demographic who may not have been able to shop with us before.”

Currently, Afterpay has an active merchant base of 14,000 clients.

Afterpay North America head Melissa Davis said: “This partnership stems from our shared desire to enhance the digital shopping experience for the very valuable Millennial and Gen Z consumer who prefer to spend their own money and pay over-time with Afterpay.”

Last month, Afterpay teamed up with Westpac to offer savings accounts to Australians.

In the same month, Afterpay made its in-store BNPL service available at major retailers across the US.
