A report commissioned by merchant acquirer
WorldPay has revealed that consumers would welcome the use of
smartphones to buy flight tickets.

The report found that 50% of the customers
surveyed would use now their handset to purchase airline tickets if
they could while 62% of them expected this option to be available
in the future.

In addition, 61% of the customers would like
to use mobile technology to check-in and 56% of them already travel

WorldPay’s Perfect Passenger Payment
Report
is aimed at exploring the views of both air carriers
and consumers on key factors regarding the experience of buying
tickets online.

WorldPay surveyed 4,500 consumers from the UK,
US, China, Japan, Brazil, Finland, Spain, Germany, France, and 51

Philip McGriskin, WorldPay’s chief product
officer, told EPI that currently only a small percentage of
airlines offer mobile payments to their customers. Nonetheless, as
much as 48% of shoppers would consider using an alternative airline
if their preferred payment choice was not available.

“The consumer is becoming increasingly
demanding about their payment choices, and will proactively seek
out airlines that accommodate them meaning airlines will need to
focus on multi-currency and alternative payments,” McGriskin
explained.
