The company noted that online grocery shopping is an emerging e-commerce segment, growing at a rate of approximately 10% annually in Germany.

Statistics show that online grocery purchases are increasing four times faster than offline grocery purchases. For 47% of consumers, convenience, including payment-related processes is the primary reason to purchase groceries online.

Wirecard executive vice-president for retail & consumer goods Christian Reindl said: “Buying groceries online is efficient and is a wise choice especially for recurring purchases. We are therefore pleased to continue to support the industry globally by digitizing payment processes.

“In the meantime, almost all consumer goods sectors have been fully digitalised, and we are seeing a clear trend towards Unified Commerce across all sales channels. In this sector, online grocery shopping plays a decisive role.”
