Facebook-owned instant messaging app WhatsApp is preparing to launch digital payment service in India in the next six months.

The company, which has over 200 million users in India, has advertised for “Digital Transactions Lead” on its careers page.

The advertisement said that the company is looking for a candidate with technical and financial background, who also has an understanding of Unified Payments Interface (UPI), BHIM payments app and Aadhaar number.

The payment service will be based on the government backed payments standard UPI that lets money be digitally transferred between different mobile money services as well as bank accounts.

During a visit to India in February this year, WhatsApp cofounder Brian Acton said that the app was in early stages of investigating digital payments in the country and that he had discussion with the Indian government about the matter.

Recently, Swedish communications app Truecaller launched a mobile payment service in India based on the UPI platform in partnership with ICICI bank.
