Taiwan-based Chunghwa Telecom’s (CHT) near field communication (NFC) trusted service manager (TSM) system secured security certification from Visa to offer Visa credit card payment services on NFC-enabled smartphones in the country.

Following certification, users can download Visa credit card information and electronic payment applications onto NFC-enabled smartphones through the TSM system to complete mobile payments, as reported by chinapost.com.tw.

According to the Taiwanese firm, mobile Visa credit card payments can be done at over 30,000 retail stores around Taiwan and overseas Visa payWave retail stores.

The telecom company is also considering establishing strategic alliance with local banks to promote mobile Visa credit card payment services leveraging its TSM system, with plans to launch an NFC ecosystem in Taiwan.

In 2012, CHT launched a pilot project for NFC-based mobile payments, which allows users with Android smartphones to make payments on Taipei’s metro system as well as in selected retail outlets.

In collaboration with Japan-based carrier KDDI, SK Planet of South Korea and Hong Kong Telecommunications, the company established the Asia NFC Alliance in February 2014, to strengthen cross-border mobile payment services by using a shared NFC tag specification, brand mark and platform.
