Providing its ambitions in the mobile
banking and payments market with a significant boost, US data
management software and services company Sybase walked off with the
award for the best mobile payments application at the International
CTIA Wireless 2009 conference held in Las Vegas earlier this
month.

The CTIA is an international organisation
representing network operators, service providers and manufacturers
in the wireless telecommunications industry.

CTIA – The Wireless Association’s annual event
is held to honour the best innovations in wireless with awards
based on 40,000 online and text votes submitted by event attendees
and wireless industry professionals.

However, while Sybase has offered mobile
banking solutions since October 2007, its major strength lies in
mobile messaging services.

The CTIA award was, in fact, thanks to
technology developed by German mobile banking technology specialist
paybox Solutions, acquired by Sybase for an undisclosed sum in
January 2009.

paybox’s mobile banking and payments solution,
mpass, has made considerable headway in the mobile market, with big
names such as network operators 02 in Germany, mobilkom and ONE in
Austria, Swisscom in Switzerland, Vodafone in Germany and Egypt,
and Maxis in Malaysia using its technology.

In Germany 02 and Vodafone have incorporated
mpass as an application linking their account holders to
Lastschriftverfahren, Germany’s direct debit system, which
is open to more than 70 million German bank account holders. The
mpass application enables customers to pay online with a short
message service confirmation, and to top-up airtime through the
internet or mobile phone.

Placed second in the CTIA mobile payments
award category was payments process First Data, for its First Data
GO-Tag contactless payments sticker (see MasterCard and First
Data opt for contactless payment stickers
).

Third was US payments technology vendor Vesta
Corporation’s OneButton Top-Up, a mobile phone top-up application
developed in partnership with Dutch digital security specialist
Gemalto.
