Payments technology firm Stripe has rolled out Chargeback Protection service that will automatically reimburse businesses for the cost of a disputed charge and any related fees.

It is built on the company’s machine learning fraud prevention tool Radar, which automatically spots fraudulent activities based on patterns learned from the company’s users.

The service will initially be available to the US and European companies using the latest version of Stripe Checkout.

A chargeback is a charge that is returned to cardholder by their bank or credit card companies when a payment made on their card was fraudulent.

During a chargeback, the businesses which received the payment is required to repay the cardholder entire amount along with a chargeback fee.

The new offering does not require merchants to submit any detailed in case of a dispute. It will offer businesses automated reimbursements for the disputed charge and associated fees.

Stripe product manager for Radar and Chargeback Protection Eeke de Milliano said: “Over the last few years, a top request from Stripe’s users—no surprise—has been for help with fraudulent chargebacks.

“Chargebacks beleaguer internet businesses: they’re unpredictable, hard to win, and hurt cash flow since disputes can lock up legitimate funds for months while the process plays out. Stripe Chargeback Protection removes that burden entirely, so companies can focus on everything else they need to do to grow their business.”

On top of the company’s existing transaction fees, the service charges 0.4% per transaction.
