The Sri Lanka’s Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) has said that it will integrate EzCash, a mobile money service operated by Dialog Axiata, to the Lanka Gate – the eServices portal of the government of Sri Lanka, according to portal futuregov.asia.
The move is part of the agency’s strategy to to extend electronic payment services to the unbanked population.
"This is an important milestone for us as we pave the way towards financial inclusion", the portal quoted Professor P. W. Epasinghe, chairman of ICTA as saying.
"It is a known fact that mobile penetration in Sri Lanka is far greater than any other electronic medium. Therefore leveraging on mobile devices as a payment mechanism for government transactions would pave the way for citizens who do not have credit/debit cards, to obtain government services" he added.
EzCash allows citizens to perform a wide array of financial transactions without the requirement of opening up a bank account.
According to the report, more than a million customers signed up for the service in last six months.
