SIA and Italian e-ticketing solutions provider AEP have partnered to enable contactless card payments at transport terminals in Turin.

The collaboration has created a digital platform that will enable users to pay for the tickets at Gruppo Torinese Trasporti (GTT) terminals deployed at subway stations and several bus lines in the city.

Customers can use EMV contactless credit and debit cards powered by Mastercard and VISA for making such payments.

They can also use smartphones and other wearable devices to pay for their journeys.

The system, which leverages technological infrastructure of AEP and SIA, is expected to support digital transformation of the public transport.

SIA marketing and sales director Eugenio Tornaghi said: “We are particularly proud to have worked with AEP on the launch of the new contactless payment system at a time when every possible measure must be taken to protect the safety of travellers.

“As of today, Turin is also one of the major Italian cities – alongside Milan, Rome, Venice and Naples – using SIA’s technology to digitise millions of travel tickets.

“Our country is accelerating its digitisation process, in particular in the field of mobility and public transport. Electronic payment is thus increasingly becoming part of the everyday life of citizens and the alternative standard to cash.”

AEP CEO Giovanni Becattini said: “With over 7,000 AEP devices, GTT is one of our most important customers and it is also thanks to our collaboration that, in 2016, we began to develop this key new technology.”

Earlier this year, Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) and SIA launched a new payment settlement system.
