Santander is urging its UK online banking
users to protect themselves from increasing fraud attacks by
downloading Rapport, a free web browser security service.

The service, provided by security solutions
provider Trusteer, is said to prevent online fraud by protecting
web communication against financial malware and phishing
attacks.

When a Trusteer user browses sensitive
websites such as internet banking or online payment pages, the
service immediately locks down the browser and creates a ‘tunnel’
for safe communication with the web site. Trusteer claims this
prevents malware from injecting data and stealing information
entered and presented in the browser.

“I strongly encourage customers download the
Trusteer software from the Santander website and use it to make
sure that their online banking session is more secure,” said Mick
Paisley, head of information security and business resilience for
Santander.

“We are seeing the level of attacks by
cybercriminals broadly increasing both in terms of volume and
sophistication. Taking precautions can have a disproportional
protective effect, customers don’t have to do too much to
significantly increase their levels of protection, and Trusteer is
one of those things which provide a significant benefit with
minimal effort.”

The Rapport solution is directly connected to
the bank and a 24/7 fraud analysis service. Attempts to steal money
from customers are claimed to be immediately detected and are
blocked using various layers of protection.

“While most users have desktop protection of
some sort, they still don’t have good protection against online
banking threats,” said Mickey Boodaei, CEO of Trusteer.

“These threats are highly targeted, highly
sophisticated and fly under the radar of traditional desktop
security solutions. Trusteer is entirely focused on working with
banks to identify and eliminate these threats through an array of
services.”

The security service is being expanded to
Santander customers after a successful roll out with Alliance and
Leicester. Boodai claims that the Trusteer network currently
includes more than 70 banks and covers more than 12 million
customers.
