Kenya’s mobile network operator Safaricom is set to introduce Lipa Na M-PESA online, an online payment service.
The new Lipa Na M-PESA service will allow traders to accept online payments for the purchase and sale of goods and services.
It will leverage the penetration of the mobile phone and the increasing internet services to provide customers with enhanced shopping experience, while allowing merchants to match their goods and services to consumers.
Safaricom CEO, Bob Collymore, said that the entry of M-PESA into the online space is a game changer that is bound to transform the conduct and uptake of online trade in Kenya.
"Lipa Na M-PESA online is part of M-PESA’s overall agenda to lead the evolution of the payments landscape in Kenya," Collymore added.
In the recent years, Kenya has witnessed substantial growth in online payments largely driven by easy availability of high speed internet and an emerging middle class, the company said.
