Online money transfer service Remitly has partnered with payment platform Alipay to enable international remittances for its customers.

Remitly customers will be able to transfer funds using their smartphone or computer. Also, users can receive money in the Alipay app.

Remitly is said to be the first online money transfer service to launch this feature in the US and offer the service internationally.

Currently, Alipay, in alliance with local e-wallet partners, caters to more than 1.2 billion users globally. Alibaba Group’s payments affiliate Ant Financial operates the service.

Remitly co-founder and CEO Matt Oppenheimer said: “There’s never been a digital-to-digital remittance solution quite like this one, and we’re excited to see how people make use of it.

“We’re sure that Alipay users will love having the ability to receive cross-border transfers, alongside the many other features that help them organise their financial lives.”

Alipay global remittances business head Ma Zhiguo said: “We look forward to working closely with Remitly for global remittances, as we continue to explore new ways to apply our technology in order to benefit more people globally.

“We are committed to working with partners such as Remitly, using innovative technologies to help global consumers gain access to inclusive financial services, creating greater value for society and bringing equal opportunities to the world.”

Funds from transfers made using the new service will be immediately available in the bank account linked to the recipient’s Alipay account.

In May last year, Remitly teamed up with Euronet Worldwide unit Ria to boost its cash pick-up network.
