Orange, the UK headquartered mobile service provider, has signed up its 10 millionth customer of Orange Money.

Orange, the UK headquartered mobile service provider, has signed up its 10 millionth customer of Orange Money.

In 2013 $3bn in transactions were sent through Orange Money.

Orange Money has success in Africa and the Middle East, although has not yet brought the wallet to other regions.

The wallet has found success due to the regions large unbanked but mobile phone carrying population.

In much of the rest of the world mobile wallets have yet to become mainstream, with Google and O2 both having to rethink their strategies.

In February Orange and Visa Europe have launched a new mobile wallet service called Orange Cash in the French cities of Caen and Strasbourg.

In March, Orange Business Services and technology infrastructure providers SIA have signed an agreement to provide a mobile POS service in Europe.

UK mobile operator O2 closed its mobile wallet in March 2014 after failing to gain sufficient traction after 18 months on the market.

Stéphane Richard, CEO of Orange, awarded a smartphone with $210 of the virtual currency to the lucky 10 millionth customer in Dakar, Senegal.

Orange Money is available in 13 countries: Botswana; Cameroon; Cote d’Ivoire; Egypt; Guinea; Jordan; Kenya; Madagascar; Mali; Mauritius; Niger; Senegal, and Uganda.
