hailed by its creators as having the potential to become the first
common standard for mobile payments in Poland, has been launched in
the country’s capital, Warsaw.
The service, Pay With Your Mobile, is the result of
collaboration between Polish bank Citi Handlowy; Polkomtel,
operator of the Polish Plus mobile network; and mPay, an acquirer
and developer of the mobile payments solution being used in the
service.

“The Pay with Your Mobile service is a real breakthrough in the
mobile payments market, thanks to this historic agreement,” said
Sonia Wedrychowicz-Horbatowska, Poland country business manager and
vice-president of the management board of Citi Handlowy.
“It is the first time a bank, a mobile network operator and an
acquirer have agreed upon a common business model. The innovation
in mobile payments offered by us can become a mass-market service,
and a standard that others will follow.”
Citi Handlowy was established in 2001 following the merger of
Citibank (Poland) and Poland’s oldest operating commercial bank,
Bank Handlowy w Warszawie.
For their first foray into the market Citi Handlowy, mPay and
Polkomtel are partnering with Zarzad Transportu Miejskiego (ZTM),
Warsaw’s public transport authority, to launch a free service which
will enable customers of Citi Handlowy to pay for ZTM time-limited
tickets directly from their bank account via a mobile phone.

respective ticket type and then press hash. Ticket codes cover four
limited time periods ranging from 20 minutes to 90 minutes.
Payments from accounts are limited to PLN300 ($100) for a single
payment while the total daily payments limit is PLN500.
For mPay, an affiliate of Polish IT and communication technology
company ATM SA, the joint venture further cements its relationship
with Polkomtel.
In September 2007 the two companies partnered to launch Poland’s
first mobile phone-based payments service which is now accepted at
some 1,500 POS in Warsaw. mPay is the only company in Poland
authorised by the country’s central bank to settle transactions via
mobile phones.
A notable advantage of mPay’s mobile payments solution is that
it is compatible with all mobile phones and does not require
installation of additional applications on a phone.
The mPay service’s primary access interfaces are unstructured
supplementary service data text and interactive voice response
which can be chosen based on user preferences. The mPay system is
also near field communications enabled and was used in contactless
payments trials involving parking meters in Warsaw in 2008.
