MasterCard has partnered with Angola’s only interbank network operator Empresa Interbacaria de Servicos (EMIS) enabling all ATMs in the country to accept MasterCard debit, credit and prepaid cards.

The partnership will allow tourists, business travelers and local citizens carrying MasterCard payment cards to withdraw Angolan currency, Kwanza, from more than 2,600 ATMs, owned by the 23 banks in the EMIS network.

The collaboration with MasterCard will boost Angola’s business and leisure tourism sector by making funds easily available to international and inter-regional visitors besides helping governments and financial institutions in the region to broaden usage and acceptance of electronic payments.

Jose Gualberto de Matos, CEO of EMIS, said: "Modernizing our electronic payments system by linking our banks through the EMIS network to MasterCard’s global payments ecosystem will contribute significantly to Angola’s ongoing economic development.

"Developing a financial ecosystem that can meet international acceptance standards further supports our government’s drive to expand domestic, regional and international tourism, as outlined in the government’s Tourism Master Plan."
