US law firm Hagens Berman is conducting
investigations into potential claims that five prepaid debit card
companies engaged in deceptive practices.

The investigations follow the issuance of
subpoenas by the Office of the Attorney General of Florida to
prepaid providers: First Data, Green Dot, Account Now, Netspend
Holdings and Unirush Financial Services.

The companies stand accused of misleading
consumers regarding hidden fees or engaging in other deceptive
practices.

Hagens Berman is investigating whether these
illegal practices exist in other states beyond Florida.

“These cards — often marketed to those who
don’t have access to traditional bank accounts – do provide
convenience for consumers,” said Steve Berman, managing partner at
Hagens Berman.

“However, these card issuers have an
obligation to be transparent about the fees they charge, something
that now is clearly in question.”
