The new partnership builds on Mercari and Docomo’s existing co-operation that began nearly five years ago. In April 2015, the two companies partnered to allow Docomo users pay for their Mercari purchases via monthly phone bills.

Launched in July 2013, Mercari is a marketplace app that allows users to purchase and sell new and used items. It has nearly 14.5 million monthly users.

The company launched Merpay within the Mercari app in February 2019. With more than six million users, the mobile payment platform is accepted at 1.7 million merchants and e-commerce sites in Japan.

On the other hand, Docomo has a subscriber base of around 73 million.
