Taiwanese network operator Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) has chosen Gemalto’s UpTeq NFC SIM software to provide security for its NFC payment programme.

The solution safeguards mobile NFC transactions by using the SIM as a secure element, providing bank-grade security.

The payment programme will enable CHT subscribers to carry out contactless payments using their mobile phones at over 20,000 MasterCard PayPass terminals.

Julie Yang, head of Taiwan at MasterCard, said: "MasterCard continues to lead the demands in Taiwan market by providing consumers with the most innovative payment technology and creating new opportunities for financial services."

"Gemalto’s UpTeq NFC SIM solution provides EMV-payment level of protection for mobile contactless transactions and also opens the door to a wealth of innovative NFC services beyond payments for the benefits of the consumers as well as business stakeholders in the value chain," she concluded.

The Financial Supervisory Commission of Taiwan has approved the initiative and is supported by the Taiwanese banks; Cathay United, Chinatrust Commercial, E.Sun and Taishin.
