Contactless payment cards supplied by payment
technology provider Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) have become
the first to hit the 50 million unit milestone in the US.
G&D is now looking to upgrade its Convego
Air contactless payment cards with enhanced metal effect features
in a bid to overcome the technical challenges of the metalized
surface of the contactless technology. The metal foil layer has
been reported to block the radio signals contactless cards rely on
to perform transactions.
The new metal effect contactless cards enable
full fourth line embossing, a feature unavailable with previous
contactless cards.
“Contactless payment is a key component of our
full service offering and facilitates payment technology in a
mobile world,” said Scott Marquardt, president of G&D
America.
“We are proud to support our card issuers by
commercializing new payment technologies that further this
transition.”
G&D has broadened its contactless platform
to include other form factors, launching mobile payment stickers
last year to allow mobile phones to act as payment devices.
