Ethiopian Airlines has expanded its partnership with travel payment solutions provider CellPoint Digital to add WeChat Pay and KNET as payment methods.

The move follows the integration of CellPoint’s Velocity payment platform with the airline’s mobile app last year.

The introduction of WeChat Pay and KNET is expected to enable Ethiopian Airlines to service the international travel market. Both the payment methods will be implemented through CellPoint Digital’s Velocity payment platform.

The African airline company has already added Alipay, a payment platform backed by China’s Alibaba Group.

The addition of WeChat Pay is aimed at catering to its customers in China, a key growth market for Ethiopian Airlines.

Introduction of KNET, a payment method in Kuwait, is aimed at enabling the airline company to expand into the Middle East.

Ethiopian Airlines digital director Miretab Teklaye said: “As we expand into new markets, we want to ensure the payment process on our mobile app is as seamless as possible for our passengers.

“Working with CellPoint Digital as our technology partner allows us to quickly add new payment methods to meet the needs of consumers in these regions.

“The introduction of WeChat Pay and KNET is the first of many new payment methods we plan to roll out, as we look to expand further into the Middle East, India and Europe.”
