Estonian mobile operator EMT, part of TeliaSonera, has commenced testing of an NFC mobile bank card in conjunction with local banks Danske Bank, Nordea Pank, SEB Pank, Swedbank and retail group Tallinna Kaubamaja.

The pilot project known as, Bank Payment Card in Mobile, will test a service that allows a mobile phone to be used as a regular bank card.

Unlike the existing system where card in inserted into payment terminal, the new system allows users to touch the terminal with a phone to carry out a transaction.

The new payment technology also enables setting a limit on purchase amount that does not require PIN code authorisation.

The pilot test group includes 150 people selected by the partners of the pilot project, who will test the new payment solution in the Kaubamaja department store’s Beauty World and Food World, Järve and Pirita Selver supermarkets and select cafes.

Expected to run for three months, the pilot project will test the technology and concept of the new payment solution as well the prototype of a secure mobile wallet and its convenience of usage in real life.

Kuno Peek, pilot project manager, said this is a rather unique international cooperation project, as in addition to international partnership, 90% of Estonian banking sector is involved in the testing of the secure mobile payment concept that would meet the international standards.
