Econet Wireless has launched a tap and pay function on its EcoCash Debit Card, marking the first contactless offering in Zimbabwe.

With the tap and pay method, consumers will no longer have to enter a PIN number on a point of sale (POS) terminal for transactions under $5 for up to a daily cap of $100.

Instead, they only need to tap the machine and payment is recognised.

The Ecocash card is supported by the largest number of POS terminals, as over 50% of all payment terminals in the country form part of EcoCash. Moreover, the card does not charge any monthly fees.

The card is part of MasterCard, and allows customers to move money directly into it from their bank accounts.
