The Euro Alliance of Payment Schemes (EAPS)
has reported its Q3 2010 payment data, showing transaction
volumes to have rocketed by 150% when compared to figures from
the same period in 2009.

A total of 860,000 cross-border ATM and POS
transactions were facilitated by the alliance of European debit
card schemes between July and September this year.

EAPS’ transaction volumes are predicted to
reach 1.8m by the end of the year, almost doubling last year’s
figures.

“EAPS’ mission is to become the leading
European payment card scheme and it is making significant progress
towards this goal,” said Peter Blasche, chairman of the EAPS
Board.

“The volumes achieved indicate that card
schemes, acquirers and payment institutions across Europe
understand the benefits of the EAPS framework. With transaction
volumes increasing at an exponential rate in 2010, the organisation
is well placed to consolidate its position as an alternative to the
global card schemes during 2011.”

The growth of EAPS’ transaction volumes has
been attributed to interbank network Eufiserv opening its ATM’s for
EAPS transactions across Austria and an agreement between the UK’s
LINK ATM network and German card scheme Zentraler Kreditausschuss
signed in July, allowing German debit (girocard) cardholders to
access to cash across the UK.
