French retailer Carrefour has partnered with Visa Europe and Worldline to enable contactless payments at its retail stores in Belgium.

The deal will see Worldline providing payment terminals to Carrefour’s stores. Worldline payment terminals in 747 Carrefour Belgium stores will now be equipped with Visa Paywave NFC technology to process contactless payment cards by the end of 2015.

Carrefour is the first retailer in Belgium to accept contactless payment cards. In 2010, the company had already launched contactless payment in all hypermarkets for its Carrefour Visa card.

Visa Europe’s Belux country manager Jean-Marie de Crayencour said: "Visa Europe is committed to ensuring that consumers have a simple, safe and secure way to pay and we are excited about partnering with Carrefour Belgium and Worldline to support the rollout of contactless payments in retail distribution.

"We’re proud to have led the way in establishing contactless payments in Europe, as the milestone of 1.1 billion contactless transactions by Visa cardholders across Europe in the last 12 months has just been reached. "

Worldline Benelux CEO Willy Walraeve said: "Worldline is confident that today’s partnership with Carrefour Belgium and Visa will support the further development of contactless payments in Belgium, thus improving the experience for both the consumer and the retailer."
