Romania-based Alpha Bank has rolled out a new application that turns mobile phones into point of sale (POS) terminals.

Dubbed Alpha PhonePOS, the application is available on Android mobile devices and can be used without any external equipment.

The application has been developed in collaboration with technology solutions provider Provision and supported by Visa.

Visa Romania country manager Elena Ungureanu said: “We are glad that, together with Alpha Bank, we are preparing to launch a very simple, innovative and secure solution for accepting contactless payments by any Romanian merchant who owns an Android phone.

“It is an advantageous service in terms of costs and flexibility, which creates new opportunities for a wide range of liberal professions in many fields, such as taxi, courier, or retail.”

The bank has launched this application specifically for self-employed clients like entrepreneurs and freelancers.

Its users can accept contactless card payments via mobile phones, watches and smart bracelets equipped with NFC technology.

In response to the growing trend of digitisation, Alpha Bank is the first bank in Romania to bring this solution into the market.

Alpha Bank Romania EVP of retail banking Cristian Dragoș said: “The launch of the new digital solution for accepting contactless card payments will certainly be a revolution in the industry.

“By launching Alpha PhonePOS, Alpha Bank will consolidate its offer addressed to Romanian entrepreneurs, providing them with one of the most advanced ranges of payment acceptance solutions currently available in the country.”

Previously, Alpha Bank also introduced POS sharing, which allows clients to use their contactless cards at bank ATMs.

The bank joined ‘VISA Instalments’ pilot programme and rolled out the ‘Instant Money Bak’ feature, which is available on retail platforms like eMAG and Fashion Days.

Alpha Bank collaborated with Printec Romania to certify Verifone Engage’s new POS terminals while also deploying the cash deposit option in new ATMs.
