Department of Transport (DoT) in Abu Dhabi is to launch a new automated fare collection system, Hafilat, and supporting cards, which will allow customers to pay bus fares and experience cash-free travels.

The Automated Fare Collection system (AFC) includes three different components, a Ticket Vending Machine (TVM), Swift Reloader Machine and Card Validator.

The TVM allows users to buy and recharge their cards, and pay fines for violating public transport rules and regulations. It accepts all kinds of payments including credit cards and cash in AED with an option to return change. TVMs will be deployed in main bus stands in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, and in shopping malls.

The Swift Reloader Machine allows passengers to recharge their Hafilat cards. It accepts only bank notes and does not have the option to return change. Around 300 Swift Reloader Machines will be installed in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain bus stations, and in customer care centres, bus shelters, Abu Dhabi International Airport, shopping malls and hospitals.

The Card Validator will be installed at the entrances and exits of all operating buses in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. These machines automatically calculate and deduct the fare as the passenger enters and exits the bus.

Department of Transport Land Sector executive director Khaled Mohamed Hashem said the launch of Hafilat, the automated fare collection system, is in line with the DoT’s strategy to provide easy, convenient and flexible solutions for commuters to reload their cards and pay for their trips via various safe accessible channels, thereby avoiding long queues to enter and exit the bus.

"Following the rollout of the service, the DoT will work to equip the cards with further features such as mobile or online payments as well as the potential to pay for other transport related services including taxis, ferries, Mawaqif or even possibly to pay for other non-transport related services such as cinemas and football matches," Mohamed Hashem added.
