EMV implementation: The US case
It is looking increasingly likely that the US will migrate to the EMV standard. Discussions have moved away from if and towards when the US will adopt the security specifications that are commonplace across the globe. Jane Cooper reports on this compelling case.
Groupon counter patent-lawsuit rejected
Internet-based discount provider Groupon may be hailed as the fastest growing company ever but it has found itself in hot water with the courts yet again after its counter-patent lawsuit against rival MobGob was rejected.The current lawsuit is in retaliation to MobGob filing a patent lawsuit against Groupon in September 2009 where it claimed the Groupon was infringing upon an 897 patent, which is exclusively licensed to MobGob.
MasterCard plans Russian processing centre
MasterCard is believed to be investing $20m in the creation of its own Russian processing centre as authorities seek to restrict domestic card payment processing.The proposed legislation, which is currently under consideration by the State Duma, aims to bring a halt to Russian card payment processing taking place abroad. The changes are claimed to be designed to protect financial and national security.
Isis launches its NFC dream
Isis, the joint venture between telcos AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile, plans to kick off its NFC contactless ambitions in Salt Lake City in 2012.The pilot programme will debut on Utahs Transit Authority, which will allow users to pay for their fares using a mobile wallet. Isis will then look to recruit local merchants to upgrade their payment infrastructure in a bid to widen the project.
Online fraud concerns for UK consumers
One fifth of online shoppers have fallen victim to online fraud in the UK, according to a YouGov survey.The research, commissioned by eWise payo, found 88% of online shoppers have either fallen foul of cyber criminals or are worried that fraud is something that will happen to them in the future.
la Caixa launches contactless ATMs
Spains la Caixa bank has deployed the worlds first contactless-enabled ATMs, claiming the technology allows the fastest ATM cash withdrawal in existence.The ATMs are currently located in the 22@ district of Barcelona, Sitges and central Palma with various locations in the Balearic Islands and Catalonia expected to be added in the future, although no specific time period has been revealed.
Contactless is confusing – survey
A recent survey of 1,000 British customers has revealed that cash is still the most popular method of payment.Secure card payments specialist, The Logic Group conducted a consumer survey looking into the payment preferences of consumers in the UK, however their findings reveal that there are still a number of challenges facing contactless payments.The survey indicates that the UK payments industry is ripe for the widespread implementation of contactless payments, but says that the biggest hurdle is educating the general public as to what contactless payments actually are.
UK retailer Wilkinson goes contactless
Barclays will be trialing its BarclayCard contactless payments technology in 25 Wilkinson stores.This product trial comes in light of BarclayCard revealing that its contactless payment system usage has increased by 150% over the past year with forecasts to grow further in the future.
Banks are failing to protect online customers – TSC
UK banks have been criticised in a report by the Treasury Select Committee for not doing enough to protect consumers from online fraudsters.
Ingenico acquires Hypercom’s US business
Payment technology provider Hypercoms US payments systems business is to be sold off to Ingenico in a $54m cash deal.The transaction is expected to close immediately prior to the completion of payment solutions provider VeriFones acquisition of Hypercom, which is due to commence in the second half of 2011.
