Coop Bank Denmark, part of the Coop retail group, has selected Gemalto’s bio-sourced Optelio Contactless EMV cards in a move to strengthen its commitment to environmental sustainability.
As part of the multi-year agreement, the Netherlands-based digital security company will offer the bank with comprehensive artwork, production and fulfilment services.
Gemalto said that the cards are made from a unique, corn-based PLA1 material that is 100% biodegradable and carbon neutral, while retaining the potential for creative, high quality artwork solutions.
The card will also incorporate the national payment scheme, Dankort, during the summer of 2015.
According to Gemalto, the speed and convenience of contactless payments will guarantee strong customer adoption and also open up previously untapped markets for low value cash transactions, thereby creating new revenue streams for the bank.
Coop Bank Denmark managing director Charlotte Skovgaard said: "Having already deployed the first ever bio-sourced EMV cards from Gemalto’s Optelio range, it is a natural step for Coop Bank to also launch the first dual interface version of the product. We hope this will set a new global environmental standard for the banking industry.
