Wirecard, a German payments technology firm, has expanded the availability of its omnichannel solutions to Australia and e-commerce services to New Zealand.

The Wirecard expansion is said to be in response to increasing adoption of digital channels in the two countries.

It is intended at expanding Wirecard’s ecosystem of real-time value added services for electronic payments in Oceania.

Australia, Wirecard said, currently leads innovation in contactless payments, bill payments, digital commerce, as well as point-of-sale applications.

In this context, the payments firm cited a report by Research and Markets. The study found cards to be the dominant payment method in Australia, with more than 50% of the country’s consumer payments made using this method in 2016.

Smartphone adoption rate, another reason for the Wirecard expansion, in the country was also found to surge in 2016.

Similarly, online spending in New Zealand is said to be currently worth NZ$4.2bn annually. In the previous year, the same was worth NZ$3.9bn.

Besides, retailers in New Zealand currently take more initiatives in combining their selling points on one platform, Wirecard said.

Wirecard general manager of Merchant Business Solutions for Australia Daniel Vukovac said: “The latest omnichannel expansion in this region marks another important step to offer our services globally to as many merchants as possible – through digitising payment processes and making transactions seamless for end-consumers.

“We are looking forward to further reducing the usage of cash worldwide and offering customers the benefits of truly digital payment solutions.”
