The first Monday of December the UK will experience the busiest shopping online day, according to Visa Europe and the chain of department stores John Lewis.

During this ‘Mega Monday’ consumers are expected to spend GBP320m online, in 6.8 m transactions on their Visa cards, with an estimated 21% increase compared to last year.

These cyber shoppers will spend more money online on Mega Monday than they will during the rest of the holiday season, retailers predict. Visa Europe calculates that the online costumers will spend £222.222 per minute, with 4.722 taking place every sixty seconds.

John Lewis experts predict that technology products and tech toys such as iPad mini, Kurio tablets, Sonos wireless music systems and Beats headphones, will be on the top ranking online purchases. Moreover, it’s calculated that most customers will choose to buy online between 8pm and 9pm.

According to Steve Perry, commercial director at Visa Europe, this is a sign that "costumers are becoming increasingly accustomed to the advantages of shopping online for everyday purchases and special items, especially in the lead-up to Christmas. This reflects the confidence that shoppers feel about the security of using their Visa cards for online transactions".
