US Payments Forum issues guidance on contactless transactions at ATMs

The US Payments Forum has released guidelines for ATM owners and operators to accept contactless chip card transactions at the ATM.

Currently, more than 85% of ATMs in the US are accepting EMV contact chip cards, and ATM owners are seeking to add contactless EMV chip capabilities to make transactions quicker.

The contactless ATM guide covers near-field communication (NFC)-enabled contactless chip cards and mobile wallets.

It provides information on contactless basics, requirements and transaction process of ATM contactless, certification, testing and approval requirements to support contactless transactions.

US Payments Forum executive director Randy Vanderhoof said: “Consumers are getting used to making fast contactless payments at merchant locations across the US; the ATM is the next logical segment to go contactless. It’s important that ATM providers, acquirers, processors, and vendors understand the requirements and full process when it comes to implementation.

“This white paper explains the differences between contact and contactless chip transactions and provides guidelines on the hardware, software and network requirements to accept contactless payments at the ATM.”

In October this year, the Forum released two new implementation resources for card issuers and merchants in the country.

Meant for card issuers, the first resource provides recommendations for issuance of dual-interface contact and contactless chip cards to ensure acceptance at all merchant locations.

The second resource is intended for merchants, and guidance for Canadian contact chip cards processing at point-of-sale (POS) terminals in the US.
