China’s UnionPay International has announced a partnership with New Zealand-based ASB Bank, adding nearly 15,000 merchants to its payments network.

Cardholders can now pay using their UnionPay card at ASB’s POS terminals, increasing the service provider’s network to 81,000 merchants across New Zealand.

As one of the major banks in the country, ASB Bank offers a range of financial services to over 1.2 million customers. It also provides payment acceptance for a large chunk of businesses in the country.

Through the partnership with ASB bank, UnionPay claims that its acceptance via POS terminals has now reached 90%.

The partnership also increases UnionPay’s QuickPass (NFC/contactless payments) acceptance base in the New Zealand market by nearly 65%.

UnionPay International South Pacific region representative Jian Jiangtao said: “The company’s success is due to the exclusive value and opportunity it presents to partners and consumers alike.

“Partnering with ASB provides a range of unique opportunities for New Zealand businesses, including access to UnionPay cardholders from around the world, particularly for local residents and international students that are based in New Zealand.”

ASB Global Transaction Banking general manager Greg Beehre said: “At ASB, we pride ourselves on offering a wide range of payment options for our customers so they can choose to pay how they like, and partnering with UnionPay is another way for us to do that. We’re looking forward to the opportunities this partnership will provide for our customers.”

Last month, UnionPay partnered with Solidarnost Bank and electronics firm Huawei to bring contactless payments in Russia. The partnership is part of the company’s strategy to address the growing demand for contactless payments in the country.

Through the partnership, Solidarnost Bank UnionPay cardholders can use Huawei Pay on their Huawei or Honor smartphones to make contactless payments in Russia.
