A solution to a laborious yet vital
security functions for retailers, the injection of encryption
security keys into POS terminals, has been launched by US
electronic payments technology developer Hypercom.

Hailed by Hypercom as an industry first, the solution, HyperSafe
Remote Key System (HRKS), enables keys to be inserted remotely thus
eliminating the traditional secure-room key injection process.

“This advance represents a technological leap that streamlines
the entire key insertion process and saves merchants time and
money,” said Hypercom vice-president, multilane products, Lloyd
Baylard.

“Retailers no longer have to ship their terminals to secure
facilities for time-consuming key insertions,” he added.

HRKS, which incorporates a key management server developed by
hardware data encryption specialist Futurex, complies with Visa’s
and the American National Standards Institute’s security guidelines
for remote key management.

Benefits of remote key insertion are abundantly evident when
compared with the procedure for secure room key insertion.

The process begins with the receiving of key parts in separate
packages which must be inspected for signs of tampering. Key
administrators then inspect their key part to ensure that it
appears random. Key parts are then placed in separate lock boxes
stored in a safe.

In the key insertion stage, POS terminals are moved into a
secure room where key administrators use a key insertion device to
load their respective passwords and key parts privately.

A laborious task indeed.
