Online payments system provider Skrill has acquired paysafecard.com, an Austrian prepaid payments business.

Skrill claimed that the addition of paysafecard.com would expand its position as a digital wallet provider. Paysafecard’s offline distribution network will add to Skrill’s large online network, which includes 100 payment options in 200 countries.

Skrill also stated that the two companies’ joint offering will combine a prepaid product with Skrill’s existing payment service.

Siegfried Heimgaertner, Skrill’s chief executive, said: “For both sides this is a strategically important acquisition and we are pleased it is now finalised. paysafecard complements our current offering and strengthens our position in the key gaming and digital media markets verticals, establishing us as a provider of end-of-end transfer of stored value,”

Skrill is majority shareholder is Investcorp Technology Partners.
