Singtel, a Singaporean telecom operator, has unveiled plans to connect its Dash mobile wallet with that of its affiliates across Asia to support cross-border payments.

The move would allow the group’s mobile wallet clients to make cashless transactions at physical merchants overseas using their current home wallet app.

Singtel’s Thai partner Advanced Info Service (AIS) will be the first to join the initiative in the middle of this year. The service will be available at over 20,000 retail merchants in Singapore and Thailand.

AIS CEO Somchai Lertsutiwong said: “The interconnectivity enhances AIS, offering our customers greater convenience and ease in transacting with their Rabbit Line Pay wallet within my AIS app when they travel to Singapore.”

Plans are on to eventually expand the service to other regional partners including India’s Airtel, Philippines’ Globe and Indonesia’s Telkomsel from the second half of 2018.

Singtel International Group CEO Arthur Lang said: “As a Group, we believe we can bring about change through our cross-border interoperable platform and collaboration with like-minded partners. Our vision is to unlock the growth potential of mobile payments in the region by providing customers with a convenient, seamless experience, and helping small merchants widen their reach to millions of consumers.”
