Atac, Rome’s public transport agency, has tapped Italian payment services group SIA to enable contactless payments at the subway and railway stations that it manages.

Commuters can now use their MasterCard, Visa, and American Express contactless credit and debit cards to pay their fares at the POS terminals at entry turnstiles.

They can also use their smartphones and wearable devices to pay for their tickets.

The service can be used for the Rome-Lido, Rome-Viterbo and Termini-Centocelle railway line stations along with the A, B/B1 and C metro lines.

Atac will be responsible for authorising and settling payments as well as calculating the best fare based on the total number of journeys.

The credit card will serve as a monthly pass for the first time.

Earlier this month, SIA inked an agreement with Venice’s public transport company AVM Holding to enable digital payments on vaporetto boats.

SIA marketing and sales director Eugenio Tornaghi said: “From today Rome too can be counted among the most innovative cities in Italy thanks to SIA’s technology already adopted for contactless payments in the Milan subway system and on board ‘vaporetto’ boats in Venice.”
