UK superstore chain Sainsbury’s is trialling a QR code-based app allowing customers to scan items with their smartphones and pay for their shopping at the tills by showing a code generated on their phone screens.

Sainsbury’s claims the new service, called ‘Mobile Scan&Go’, is the first initiative of its kind in the UK. A limited number of customers have been invited to join the trail in two stores in London and one in Hampshire.

Customers need to download the app and register at the store where they want to use it through Sainsbury’s loyalty card Nectar. To start shopping, customers need to check in by scanning a QR code located at the entrance of the shop. They can then use the phone’s camera to scan the products’ barcode. The app progressively tracks the amount spent, producing at the end a QR code on the phone’s display that can be scanned at the tills to pay. Customers can then pay with cash or cards.

Luke Jensen, Sainsbury’s group development director, said: "Our innovative Mobile Scan&Go technology is fantastic for those wanting to manage their budget or simply those who want a quicker in-store experience."

Mobile Scan&Go does not have an integrated payment system allowing users to pay directly with their phones. Sainsbury’s said this option may be introduced in the future. "One step at the time for us," a Sainsbury’s spokesperson told Electronic Payments International. "We first want to see if customers are happy to scan items with their smartphones before moving on to payments."
