Autorite des marches financiers (AMF), the financial regulator of Quebec, has established a new fintech lab to explore the current and potential applications of new technologies among regulated entities.
The lab will study new technologies rather than the business models based on them, helping the regulator gain insight it requires to carry out its role in a digital environment.
This includes updating the AMF’s knowledge of new technologies and exploring how AMF can use them to enhance its business processes, as well as providing insight with respect to a review of the regulatory framework and to the regulatory sandbox initiatives implemented by the Canadian Securities Administrators.
AMF said that its new lab will invite university students in engineering and technology to work as interns on lab projects, under the supervision of its fintech working group members.
The regulator has also struck a partnership with distributed ledger technology firm R3 to gain access to information about projects undertaken by other regulators and develop its own initiatives more effectively.
