Pay by finger at Shell
outlets

In a world first for a fuel retailer, Shell Oil Products US is
offering customers a biometric payment option in a pilot project at
pumps and convenience stores at ten filling stations in Chicago. If
successful, the service could potentially be rolled out at 6,100
Shell-branded filling stations operated by the fuel company in the
US.

The biometric authentication system being used, supplied by payment
technology developer Pay By Touch, utilises a sensor that scans a
customer’s finger. Pay By Touch explained that the system,
Finger-Scan Payments, does not use actual fingerprints. Instead, it
creates a set of 40 data points on a finger that are encrypted and
converted into a mathematical equation that allows for a secure
identity match at the POS.

The system is deployed at about 3,000 locations in the US, UK and
Singapore and used by 3.5 million customers.

Shell customers who opt for the Finger-Scan Payments service
register at a participating filling station, where a finger scan is
taken and loaded onto the Pay By Touch platform. The service, which
becomes available immediately, can be linked to a bank account, a
Shell Card or a Shell MasterCard-branded credit card.

In addition to the biometric authentication service, Shell is
piloting handheld wireless card scanners to process payments on
forecourts of filling stations in Central America, India and
Indonesia. Chris Suess, Shell’s manager of global refuelling
innovations, explained that the payment tests are being conducted
to determine “what resonates most with our customers”.
