The Government of Victoria state in Australia has announced that a mobile payment version of its myki contactless smart card ticketing system will be available from 28 March 2019.

Android smartphone customers will be able to use the Mobile myki service for public transport transactions. This eliminates the need for carrying a physical card.

The new solution leverages Google Pay. Furthermore, it can be used with existing infrastructure of myki gates and readers on Melbourne’s trams, at train stations and on myki-enabled buses in Victoria.

Mobile myki has been subjected to testing since July 2018. In addition, the majority of the trial participants were found to be satisfied with the mobile payment service.

The service can also be topped up easily and customers can view their recent travel history within the app.

Minister for Public Transport Melissa Horne said: “Mobile myki will make topping up and touching on quicker, and travelling easier.

“It’s the next step in building a smarter, more reliable public transport network and is on top of our record investment in major transport projects – to deliver more services, more often, right across the state.”

The new payment system has been developed in alliance with Victoria’s ticketing provider NTT Data and Google. The use of physical myki card will be retained across the network.

Furthermore, the government is now working towards expanding the use of the new system to additional mobile platforms.
