Finland-based MePIN / Meontrust has introduced additional biometric authentication options to its MePIN Universal Authentication platform to tackle online payment frauds.

The new authentication policies, Human Recognition and User Recognition, can be used together with traditional authentication methods including PIN codes and fingerprint recognition.

In order to boost security during high risk transactions, the MePIN biometric policies can be used as an added layer of protection in risk based authentication.

The new policies extend the existing MePIN Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) based non-repudiation without affecting the user experience.

MePIN, which is a member of MasterCard Start Path and FIDO Alliance, said that the Human Recognition option comprises liveness detection and enables a payment or authentication app to recognise a human user during a transaction, and optionally record a snapshot photo or video of the user.

During the process a human face is recognised when PIN or fingerprint is entered, without requiring additional steps from the user.

In case of a potential payment disputes and fraud investigations, the merchant or payment provider can submit the optionally saved photo as the additional proof of the user.

During a transaction, the app ensures that only the registered user is allowed to authorise a payment by comparing the live visual footage to pre-provisioned face biometrics of the user.

MePIN / Meontrust CEO Markku Mehtala said: “Card not present fraud has not been solved with the current clumsy authentication solutions. MePIN provides non-repudiation for transactions while minimizing the friction of authentication.

“Consumer privacy must not be forgotten either. Face recognition must be used wisely."

Available as an software development kit (SDK), the MePIN biometric solution can be integrated by the payment card issuers or payment service providers into their existing mobile apps or use as a template to launch new payment security apps.
