billion) marketing products and services on TV in 2008, estimates
media investment management company GroupM. Translating more of
those billions into sales is the key objective of VoicePay TV, a
payments processing service launched by Voice Commerce Group
(VCG).
phone-based voice authentication solution launched in early-2007 by
VCG, a company founded by online payments pioneer Nick Ogden.
VCG stressed that businesses adopting VoicePay TV benefit from a
shorter gap in the purchasing lifecycle between grabbing a
customer’s attention and selling them a product as they need no
longer rely on a customer to remember their advert or product
before visiting the relevant retail website.
In addition, VCG stressed that because all calls from customers
can be traced back to product codes from exact adverts and
locations businesses can assess return on investment from
advertising and monitor ad-campaign effectiveness.
VCG is not only targeting large companies with VoicePay TV. In
its sites are small retailers using internet TV alternatives such
as YouTube to market their wares. As an attraction VoicePay TV
comes at a low £150 annual fee with no transaction charges for the
first £10,000 worth of sales.
To create a VoicePay account consumers complete a one-time only
enrolment during which a few spoken words are used to generate a
biometric voice-print. Whenever a purchase is made, the user calls
the national Voice Pay number and authorises payment using their
voice-print as a digital signature. Accounts are linked to a debit
or credit card.
At the heart of Voice Pay is UK software vendor Biometric
Security’s (BS) VoiceVault voice verification software. According
to BS, to verify the identity of a caller 117 calculations and
tests are used to compare a previously enrolled voice-print with a
voice-print generated at the time of verification – all in less
than one second.
The VoicePay network covers over 50 countries and is fully
integrated with the Visa and MasterCard networks.
