Spanish lender La Caixa has reportedly partnered with Telefonica, Vodafone, Orange and Visa Europe to launch Europe’s largest commercial mobile NFC payments system.

La Caixa plans to launch the service in January for selected customers of the three mobile operators, with the system set to become fully operational by February 2014, in time for the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Through this payment system, La Caixa customers will be able to combine all their cards on their mobile devices securely, and use them to make purchases without having to attach any accessories to their handsets.

According to La Caixa, the new mobile payment service will be available to an extensive number of users from the outset, while Telefónica, Vodafone and Orange together represent more than 80% of the Spanish mobile phone market.

La Caixa claimed that the mobile payments can be made at any of the more than 300,000 NFC-enabled POS terminals in Spain.
