JCB International (JCBI) and European e-payments company Worldline have signed an agreement in order to build a JCB card acceptance network in Belgium, operating from 2015.

The two companies signed a Licence Agreement that will also allow JCB merchant acquiring operations in the country.

Willy Walraeve, CEO for Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg at Worldline, commented: "Offering JCB cards will enable Belgian merchants to satisfy a larger range of potential clients.

"We believe that our customers will benefit from the acceptance of this well recognised and established payment card scheme. We are very proud to add JCB cards in out portfolio and are looking forward to the success of this collaboration."

Worldline delivers non-cash payment transactions via a range of solutions for POS, online and mobile payments.

Kimihisa Imada, deputy president of JCBI, said: "As Belgium continues to be the favourite destination for many Japanese, Asian and European visitors, JCB card acceptance will bring about enhanced opportunities to many business sectors as well as improved conveniences to JCB cardholders."

Currently, JCB cards are accepted at about 25m merchants worldwide, including several millions in Europe.

JCBI is the international operations subsidiary of the Japanese Credit Bureau (JCB), a Nippon credit card company based in Tokyo and founded in 1961.

Worldline was launched in July 2013 as "the subsidiary for e-payments transactional services" of Atos – an International IT services company.

At the time, Gilles Grapinet, Atos’ senior executive and CEO at Worldline, said: "Worldline is now ideally positioned and equipped to act as a leader in the fast-growing and constantly evolving European payment market landscape while developing its global reach in Asia and Latin America."
