China-based mobile payment solution provider Beijing Inspiry Technology has initiated roll out of its Inspiry QR-code service in Japan.

Inspiry Smart Box is an offline, self-service solutions that acts as a payment terminal. The solution is currently available at certain retail locations in Tokyo and Osaka.

The company is introducing an upgraded version of Inspiry Smart Box called Smart Box Extended in Japan. It allows customers to pay for their purchases by scanning a QR code. This can be done through the Alipay app.

These boxes allow easy set up and require minimal configuration for the QR-code scanner and payment keypad.

Cashless payments

Inspiry expects the launch to cater to the Japanese mobile-based mobile payment market. In 2015, cashless payments comprised 18% of overall consumer transactions in the country. Moreover, the government intends to increase this to around 40% by 2025.

Inspiry founder Wang Yue said: “Japan should seize the opportunities emerging in the global 2D barcode payment market and accelerate the transformation of the entire 2D barcode payment industry chain with the aim of becoming one of the drivers behind the growth of the 2D barcode payment services worldwide.”
