IDEX Biometrics has secured a foundational patent for its unconnected on-card enrolment on biometric smart cards in Australia.

The foundational patent was awarded by IP Australia, the Australian Patent and Trademark Office.

Earlier this year, IDEX received two enrolment patents in the same patent family by the United States Patent and Trademark office.

The Australian patent encompasses broad claims including devices and methods to enable a user enrol a template image of their finger onto a biometric card in their own home.

IDEX will send the user a new biometric smart card and a light-weight receptacle with a power source. To complete the enrolment, the user will have to insert the card into the receptacle and touch the fingerprint sensor area on the card several times.

Throughout the process, the card is not connected to any other device or network. The technology eliminates the need to visit a bank, or connect to a compatible device or complete enrolment.
